East Somerville Main Streets today released the following statement concerning the accident that resulted in the death of Cheryl Richards:

“East Somerville Main Street Board and Staff offer our deepest sympathies to the friends and family of Cheryl Richards after the terrible tragedy on Mystic Avenue on July 20th 2019.

The State of Massachusetts, MassDOT, and the City of Somerville are aware of the dangers of this intersection and are working on a comprehensive plan to improve the Kensington Connector.

However, immediate safety improvements are needed to protect the lives of the residents, school children, and community members who must use this crossing every day.

East Somerville Main Streets will continue to work with the community and officials to ensure our concerns are addressed.

On behalf of the staff and board we would also like to invite members of the community to leave flowers at the temporary memorial set up at the Stop and Shop crossing in honor of Cheryl Richards.”

Nicely stated and finally a response from civic leadership. I have been perplexed in the week since this incident that there has been no statement from City Hall or Police about this incident as compared with the death of the woman on Powder House Boulevard several months ago.

  2. Citizen says:

You haven’t heard a statement from City Hall or the PD because it happened on a state road, a highway. The investigation and jurisdiction falls on MSP and the State. Don’t make it into something it isn’t.

The fact that it happened in the city there should have been some response from city hall weather it is a state rd or city..so I dont think it something out of nothing just the right thing to do! my heart breaks for the family..RIP Ms Richards….
