Newstalk – June 12

On June 12, 2019, in Latest News, by The Somerville Times

This Saturday, June 15, finally, it’s the Third East Somerville Reunion at the Somerville City Club, across from Holiday Inn on Innerbelt Road. Thanks to hard work and efforts put into this by Dan Rogovich and his small but dedicated bunch of helpers, it should be a great one once again for one and all. The last time was two years ago and well over 100 to 150 attendees showed up from all over the state and across the country. Lots of people who grew up in East Somerville have missed the last two but wanted to have a third. Some of us here at The Somerville Times are from East Somerville we will be there and have already reached out to others. A small group of “down backers” behind the Bucket who grew up there in the 60’s will all be there. They meet every four or so months to talk about old times and great times. Help make this a success. Go online to Facebook to check it out. Ask Dan what you can do to help. He is looking for the food, entertainment and just plain East Somerville fun. Dan and his small crew have been working on this event, when you get there thank him for doing this. It’s a great way to bring back old memories of the best section of the city East Somerville, so many stories and old friends. Pictures will be taken for next week’s paper.

Come on people, let’s support all the businesses that are being affected by the bridge closings. This Saturday, June 15, is the Somerville Arts Council’s Night Market in Ball Square, from 5:00 to 10:00 p.m., right after Joe’s Jazz & Blue’s Festival in Powderhouse Park. We need to support Ball Square, as well as lower Washington St. and other places across the city.

Celebrating their birthdays this week: Happy birthday to Muriel White, formerly of Winter Hill, is celebrating this week. We, of course, hope she has a great one. Happy birthday to another former Somerville person, Raymond Trant, formerly the Chairman of the Licensing Committee. We hope Ray has a great day for himself. Happy birthday to Carolyn Pedersen, who can be seen all the time here in Somerville, where she’s from. We wish Carolyn a great day. Happy birthday to Suzanne Bremer, of Prospect Hill. A nice lady who we hope has a great birthday as well. Happy birthday to our good friend Beth Chamberlain, whose husband’s family is from here. We hope Beth has a great day and enjoys the new addition to her home. Finally, to Councilor At-Large Stephanie Hirsch, we hope she has a great day as well. To those that are celebrating this week, and we didn’t post, again we wish you the best of birthdays.

We hear a big shake up is coming at the DPW very shortly, some say by the end of the month. We hear that both the current Commissioner, Stan Koty, and his assistant, Richard Willette, are leaving (or?). We hear that Steve Mac will be the new designee from the mayor. Normally, shakeups like these happen after an election, but maybe Joe doesn’t care. We hear he’s only planning on one more term and then the seat will be open. Wonder if a deal was made?

Davis Square is in bad shape, with bricks missing and just plain in need of work. Now, you look at City Hall and wonder, didn’t the mayor have it painted not too long ago? It looks terrible, peeling and chipped paint. Maybe by using a brand name paint next time it might last longer?

Before you know it, all the streets will be reduced to one lane for cars (who pay excise tax) and one lane for bikes (who don’t pay an excise tax of any kind). Check out Beacon Street, Broadway, talk about traffic backing up.

Candidates having a fundraiser or campaign kickoff are invited to let us know and we will mention it here in Newstalk. Good luck to all who pulled out papers to run for office. Go online to check out who is running for what office: www.somervillema.gov. We need more candidates.

Candidate for Ward 3 School Committee (open seat) Sarah Phillips held her campaign kickoff last night, June 11, at Remnant Brewing in Bow Market in Union Square. We are sure many showed up for the event. Sarah spoke of her experience as a parent, teacher and social worker and how that would be used to improve public education. Unfortunately, we were not able to mention it earlier, we were just notified.

The Somerville City Club manager Donny Johnson is looking all the time for new members to join the club, if you think you’d be interested give him a call at 617-623-9340. It’s a great local club for the residents of Somerville, and has been around now for over 40 years, their location on Innerbelt Road. Plenty of parking and a very nice hall for rent, some say the best deal in Somerville. Call and ask for details at 617-623-9340.
