A Somerville Memorial Day remembrance

This photo was taken in front of 75-79 Josephine Ave. in the summer of 1953. The street had so many more trees on it back then. The car in the background is a Studebaker.

The peace treaty on Korean Peninsula that ended military hostilities on the Korean Peninsula had just been signed. 300 Chevy Corvettes rolled off the assembly line that year. Dwight “Ike” Eisenhower was president.

The flag being held only had 48 stars that year. The boy holding the flag is Richard Keane, who graduated from Somerville High School in 1960 and later joined the U.S. Army 82 Airborne Division. His arm was in a bandage that day from an injury at summer camp.

The boy to the left in sling arms is Gary Mello, who became a U.S. Army Sgt. in the Vietnam War and is now deceased.

The boy to the right in shoulder arms is Wayne A. Daley, who was a combat wounded Marine of the Vietnam War and now resides in Seabrook, N.H.
