The Joan Toomey Memorial award is Walnut Street Center highest level of volunteer recognition. This year’s recipient of the Joan Toomey Memorial Award is Lois Bellini.   Lois Bellini, a lifetime resident of Somerville, received The Walnut Street Center Joan Toomey Volunteerism Award, given to an individual who exemplifies dedication and service to further the quality of life of others.  Lois was instrumental in establishing recreational, religious and social activities for people with developmental disabilities back in the 1960’s, before state and federal funding provided any such services. Inspired by her now 49-year-old daughter with Down syndrome, Lois worked with friends and local political leaders, including Senator Edward Kennedy, to advocate for improved standards and protective laws. She continued volunteering in many ways while raising a family of five and enjoying a successful career as a licensed social worker. Lois currently serves on the Ethics Committee of the Developmental Disabilities Service in the New England Region, and sits on the Board of Directors for the Special Needs Arts Program.
