Planning Board candidate Tim Talun, a Prospect Hill resident, certified architect, school parent, and long-time neighborhood and community activist, was not approved last Monday night, March 18, by the Somerville City Council‘s Confirmation of Appointments Committee with a six to four Recommendation ‘Not to Approve’ Talun as a new member of the Somerville Planning Board.

In a marathon session of the City Council Committee, Talun was grilled extensively regarding his opinions on affordable housing, a key topic long championed by the democratic socialist organization Our Revolution, who were influential in the elections all of the now-elected candidates (now Councilors) who voted Talun down. The City Council will formally take up the matter to accept the committee vote at their next regular meeting on March 28, 7:00 p.m. at City Hall.

Many Union Square area residents and politically active individuals are outraged, disappointed, and disheartened by the callous hypothetical scenarios asked of Talun about affordable housing in his quest for appointment to the Planning Board.

Ward 3 Councilor Ben Ewen-Campen (who represents a significant section of the Union Square area currently planned for redevelopment around the soon to be constructed Green Line T stop) was singled out by critics for his remarks about Talun, especially since he had so often sung the praises of Mr. Talun in Union Sq. community affairs over the years. Of particular significance in this rebuff of Talun is that many voting against him have been openly critical of prior mayoral appointments for not being as professionally credentialed as they (Council members would prefer). One look at Talun’s resume refutes those concerns entirely. Why ‘no’ voting Councilors, the change in attitude now?

Certainly the mayor and OSPCD Director George Proakis (until recently, the Somerville City Planner) and their team were not thrilled about this denial of a respected long-term community activist with especially significant architectural planning and design talent for a position that will decide upon dozens of recommendations as outlined in Somerville’s Master Planning document, SomerVision.

Undoubtedly, Mayor Joe will be working hard to try and turn a couple of those ‘no’ votes into favorable ones. If unsuccessful, he must encourage Joe Favaloro (who, by the way, was also not re-appointed last year by this same Committee) to remain on the Planning Board as a holdover member, since his term is not up until 2021.

As a long-time member of the Somerville City Council predecessor Board of Aldermen, it is my humble opinion that the “No to Talun” vote is indicative of political motivations first, and professional qualifications second. Where else are you likely to find an active community member with impeccable credentials and years of architectural experience in planning and design, who has spent years advocating for the neighborhood that he and his family live in already?

The Ward 3 Councilor and his opposing colleagues are missing a major opportunity to confirm one of the most capable and qualified individuals (who happens to live in the midst of the Union Sq. redevelopment) with the technical knowledge to add to the negotiations for the Community Benefits Agreement, slogging along now at glacial speed.

The City Council likely takes up this recommended Committee matter for final approval tomorrow night, Thursday, March 28.

It is not too late to contact the ‘no’ voting Council Members, McLaughlin, Scott, Ewen-Campen, Clingan, Davis, Ballantyne, and Mbah, since a member could change their mind and vote while the matter of Mr. Talun’s appointment status is being discussed during the meeting.

Let all the Councilors know how you feel about this missed opportunity to confirm the mayor’s recommended candidate Tim Talun by sending an email message to: citycouncil@somervillema.gov. All Members will receive your message. While you’re at it, let the mayor’s office know by copying his office at: Mayor@somervillema.gov.

The future of Union Sq. and surrounding neighborhoods are at stake, so don’t let it pass by. Oh, and don’t forget it is an election year for all City Councilors. The Tim Talun vote matters.

This was petty ‘vengeance’ politics for imagined crimes of Mr Talun years before. Union honcho Rand Wilson sat in the room keeping an eye on his 6 boys–Ben, JT, Will, Matt, Jesse and Lance–who were the majority 6 of 11 votes, and so that they voted ‘no’ as had been agreed upon beforehand. All the “it was such a difficult decision to make” was a lie–of course they’d say that. All 6 of them even sat together at one end of the table.

Kudos to councilors Katjana, Mary Jo, Bill and Mark for showing sound common sense and a large dose of reality in voting ‘yes’. One of them even said that it was one of the worst decisions they’d seen in decades. Can we assume Stephanie would have voted ‘yes’ had she been there? Quite possibly. It would have been 6-5 against.

There is still a chance today for one of the Rand 6 to change their vote in the regular meeting of the City Council tonight. But would one? Would more than one? Better give Rand a call and ask him if it’s OK, as he runs the Our Revolution Somerville people??

This petty vengeance identity politics does need to stop. It’s who is who, and what are the virtue signals? And just so the millennial voters out there can try to find some understanding and clarity, this is not what Bernie Sanders stood for. It’s mean spirited and vile.

Is there much hope here to reverse this decision? Why not. The Planning Board is not the venue for affordable housing concerns. Those belong with the City Council and the Mayor as our elected representatives. So will the Rand 6 please wake up and smell the roses of reality and leave their petty vengeance at home?

Mr Tim Talun was exactly the hard hitting critical person the Planning Board needed as an architect–where the lack of an architect on that board had been noted for years–and this was not a good day for Somerville with this ‘no’ decision.

A person can make a mistake any day of the week. What’s called for here is a show of independence of spirit and integrity to fix that mistake. It’s up you, gentlemen.

Didn’t this group run on the idea that some of the ‘old guard’ were nothing more than rubber stamps for the Mayor? They were better, they wouldn’t be beholden to the Mayor, their votes weren’t for sale? As many suspected, they are beholden, but to another source. Maybe it’s time for these votes to take place in executive session.

Well, there is a member with multiple degrees in architecture on the board right now, though not currently practicing in that field, and if you want to see what a professional and prepared person looks like, go back and watch her reconfirmation, then watch this one and tell me what you think.

City Councilor Hirsch gets the *wuss of the week* award for not
defending Talun last night at City Hall. Why many of these councilors
think that everything is about affordable housing is smoke blowing
when they do little about it. The Cambridge City Council’s idea for
100% zoned affordable housing areas was sent to committee for review
and discussion, so where will that lead? More smoke?

JT scored points for his flaming yellow hair, but somewhat less for his
enthusiastic words of praise about Amelia Aboff– feeling a little
guilty about Talun, ye of the yellow-haired tribe?

‘God forbid’ Bill White goes away! Councilor White was on a roll last
night growling about how GLX was $3 billion under Gov Patrick, got
trimmed to $1.3 billion with Gov Baker, and had the GLX Constructors
developer coming in at the below basement price of $1 billion and
possibly going even lower to $900 million. Bill White had strong feeling
that Somerville get it’s $50 million GLX contribution back because we
didn’t get anything for it, and even less with 10 feet wide crappy
community paths, and T stations that might not have elevators for
those who need them. Councilor White scored points. Will he be
    getting yellow hair?

It will be interesting to see if anyone wants to even apply for these positions anymore and I think that is what the city council is pushing for.

If they don’t confirm anyone I am guessing that they think they will have more say in the things that are done by independent boards for a reason.

So be prepared for every facet of Somerville to be run by a small faction from Our Revolution.

    Should be totally miserable.
