Life in the Ville by Jimmy Del Ponte

The holiday season means family, festivities, and lots of food. It seems like a good time to look at some of my Somerville friends’ (strange to us, but delicious to others) food favorites. I did a survey of kooky eats that current and former Somerville residents enjoyed as kids. Some of us still enjoy our odd sounding but delectable treats today.

Baked Spam, and a nice mustard and black pepper sandwich? You may he saying yuck, but everyone has at least one wacky favorite tasty treat. I happen to love potato chips and a hot dog with a glass of milk.

I reached out and was amazed at all the people who shared their personal favorite snacks. Here goes:

Leftover cold baked beans sandwich.

Gourmet extraordinaire Jimmy Del Ponte with gourmet chef Julia Child.

Peanut butter and mustard sandwiches.

Peanut butter and butter sandwich.

Meatball and mayonnaise sandwiches on white bread.

Mashed bananas on toast.

Onion sandwich.

Peanut Butter and Potato Chips sandwich.

Ketchup/mustard sandwich.

Mayo sandwich.

Sliced liverwurst sandwich.

Warm milk over toast in a bowl.

Sugar on Wonder Bread sandwich.

Molasses and butter on white bread.

Peanut Butter and Cheese sandwich.

Spaghetti sandwich.

Cheese and peanut butter sandwich.

Peanut Butter, Mayo and lettuce sandwich.

Potato chip sandwich.

Grilled cheese with grape jelly on it.

Italian bread, ricotta cheese, and Spanish olives .

Liverwurst and cream cheese on pumpernickel.

Fritos and cream cheese.

A can of tuna in olive oil and a can of corn mixed together with hot sauce on top.

Moxie and milk.

Pickles and potato chips on white bread with mustard.

Kippers and peanut butter on Ritz crackers.

Canned carrots sandwich.

Mayo and Jelly sandwich.

Mayo and pepper sandwich.

Ham salad but baloney instead of ham.

A roll with Nestle’s Quik powder.

Ground up bologna and pickles and mayo sandwich (I’m going to try that).

Liver, onions and mushrooms. Yum!

Potato chips dipped in chocolate ice cream.

French Fries dunked in a strawberry shake.

Sardines or anchovies right out of the can.

And for dessert … Pepto Bismol, Brioschi, or Plop Plop, Fizz Fizz!

Now, if you will excuse me, I’m going to dunk my baloney and mayo sandwich in chocolate milk. Bon Appétit!
