In the main reading room

Deborah Leipziger

I
I am not sure why you brought me here
Except to share what you love with me.
There is real intimacy in silence.

My earring falls to the marble floor
The sound echoes
Mother of pearl.

II
I watch you circumnavigate the room
Paying homage to the books and sculptures.

Do you know that I am watching you?
Can you feel my gaze?

III
Your hand lingers on my back
as if there are notes to be played

the pod from the tree curves
so full of seeds

what music are you tapping on my back, I long to ask.
