Police arrested two people Sept. 28 as they caught the couple climbing out of a car that did not belong to them.

Alicia Grace, 36, of 62 Woodville St., Everett, and Preston Reid, 26, of 16 Cutter St., were walking around Broadway, Franklin and Webster streets in East Somerville pulling on car door handles, police said.

Car break-ins increased 67 percent this summer compared to 2009. Acting Police Chief Mike Cabral said most cars that are broken into in Somerville have been left unlocked. Deputy Chief Paul Upton said police regularly receive complaints of suspects walking down city streets pulling on car door handles.

Grace was allegedly seen climbing out of the victim’s car in the parking lot of the East Somerville Community School. She claimed it was her sister’s car but gave incorrect information when police checked the vehicle’s registration, police said.

The owner of the car told police she did not know Grace or Reid and they had no permission to be in the car, police said.

Grace and Reid were arrested and charged with breaking and entering a vehicle in the nighttime for a felony.
