SHS Girls Track impresses at State Meet

The Somerville High Girls Track Team competed in the MIAA Division 2 State Meet on Wednesday, February 10 at the Reggie Lewis Center.

Leading the way for the Highlanders was Senior Gabrielle Etienne who won the Shot Put with a throw of 39′ .25″. This is the second State Championship for Gabrielle as she won the Division 1 Outdoor Shot Put last spring. Her winning throw last spring was 38’0″. Gabrielle will represent Somerville High School at the State Finals on Saturday, February 20 at the Reggie Lewis Center. The meet will start at 9:30 a.m.

Also scoring for SHS was Sophomore Youdine Felix who placed 4th in the 55m Dash running a time of 7.62. Youdine had set a career best time of 7.60 in the trials. Youdine also competed in the Long Jump.The Girls Track team placed 10th overall in Division 2 with a total of 15 points.

Also competing for the Highlanders were Lourdes Jean-Louis in the 55m Dash and Melissa Sanon and Jackie Eloi in the 55m Hurdles. Sanon and Eloi also competed in the High jump and Eloi got a personal best in the Shot Put with a throw 31′ 4.5″.

The 4x200m relay team ran a season best time of 1:52. 51 and finished 14th. Running on the 4x200m relay was Katia Mathews, Lourdes Jean-Louis, Melissa Sanon and Youdine Felix.

The 4x400m relay also ran their season best time of 4:36:63 and finished 19th. Running on that squad was Leighann Nguyen, Jennifer Bermudez, Fiona Borondy-Jenkins and Katia Mathews.

The 4x800m relay just missed their fastest time of the season with a quick time of 10:49.02 which earned them 15th place overall. Competing on the 4x800m relay was Fiona Borondy-Jenkins, Isabella Ferarri, Maureen McNabb and Alice Egar.

The Girls Team was led this season by Captains Leighann Nguyen, Maureen McNabb and Melissa Sanon. Sanon was the team’s high scorer went undefeated in the GBL in both the Hurdles and High Jump. The team finished the dual meet season with a 4-1 record, losing only to Malden by two points. The team came back to win the GBL Championship meet for the third year in a row.
