Aldermen clashed over a reappointment to a city commission Thursday night, forcing a recess and talking over one another.

Ward 6 Alderman Rebekah Gewirtz said disability advocates have raised concerns about the responsiveness of the city’s disabilities commission on issues such as compliance with American Disabilities Act regulations and access to city buildings. “I’m not getting feedback that things are going great on that committee,” she said. “It seems like concerns get pushed aside.”

Gewirtz said her move to send the re-appointment of commission member Carlene Campbell back to committee did not concern Campbell herself but “it’s important we understand fully what the role of the [appointee] is.”

Ward 7 Alderman Bob Trane and Ward 2 Alderman Maryann Heuston spoke over one another in response to Gewirtz’s comments before Alderman President Jack Connolly called for a short recess.

Trane said a delay in the appointment could affect grant funding for disability projects in the city. Alderman-at-Large Bill White said Campbell can still vote on the commission until she is re-appointed.
