A mourning friend of a deceased Somerville woman is calling an alderman "cold and uncaring" after a funeral procession dust-up outside St. Ann's Church on May 26.

In a letter to the Somerville News, Robert Sodi said Ward 4 Alderman Walter Pero "was ranting and raving" about the parking procedures outside a particularly busy funeral for Keri McCarthy, a Somerville woman who died in May at age 35.

Pero declined to comment to a Somerville news reporter this week. "I don't have anything to say about anything," he said.

On the day of the funeral, mourners quickly filled the church's parking lot and arrangements were made by police and the funeral director, Patrick Doherty, to block Thurston Street and park the extra cars there, according to Sodi's letter.

The decision blocked the street and prevented parked cars from moving for the duration of the funeral, Sodi said.

Pero, who lives across the street, left his home to complain, Sodi said.

"Mr. Pero, showing total disregard for the family and the funeral attendee's, demanded that the police ticket the cars that were parked in the street," Sodi wrote in the letter which was also sent to Board of Aldermen President Jack Connolly.

"He berated Patrick Doherty…demanding explanations as to why the cars were parked as they were," Sodi wrote in his letter. "He was ranting and raving "what if there was a fire or medical emergency?"

Sodi said he was "outraged" by Pero's behavior.

"Here is an elected official, supposedly there to serve the city of Somerville and he shows no respect or sympathy for the very people he is there to represent," Sodi wrote. "Would Mr. Pero be so concerned about parking if one of his family member's funeral mass caused such parking issues?"
