The former headquarters for a notorious criminal gang reopened Sunday – this time as a church.

Somerville Church of God on Marshall Street is the new tenant at the old Marshall Motors site, formerly owned by Howard T. Winter and a longtime headquarters for the Winter Hill Gang.

Pastor Collin Greene led his parishioners through the doors of the new church as they praised God and sang with fervor.

Marshall Street was the center of the Winter Hill Gang’s activity in the 1960s and 1970s – with a backroom at Marshall Motors and Pal Joey’s, an infamous barroom, across the street.
