Newstalk – August 20

On August 20, 2014, in Latest News, by The Somerville Times

This Friday night, August 22 (rain date August 23), don’t forget that the Somerville Boxing Club in association with Mayor Curtatone, the Somerville Recreation Department and USA Boxing will be presenting again this year Fight Night at Dilboy. Doors open at 6 p.m., the first bout is at 7 p.m. Admission cost is $20 for adults, $10 youth. Children under 12 are free with paid adult admission. It’s a great time, so mark your calendar. There’s been a lot of controversy online between those in favor of and opposed to kids in boxing. We here at The Times support the Somerville Boxing Club. It’s a great way for kids to learn. Better than the streets.

Have you been calling Massport about the overhead flights, especially the ones at night time? The planes are so low you can count the windows and wave “Hi” to those in the seats. We need to all call Massport at 617 561-3333 and leave a message. Flood the phone lines and maybe – just maybe – someone from Massport will listen. Perhaps since we have such a vocal group of elected officials we can get them to do something. The Board of Alderman can pass resolutions banning Styrofoam and where to put pension money, why not a resolution from our elected officials telling Massport how we feel? We have an idea how about our own Congressman Mike Capuano, who lives right here in Winter Hill. Maybe we can get him to call off the dogs at the FAA. Something. These planes overhead at 1, 2 and 3 a.m. and throughout the early a.m. is ridiculous. The number of people upset over the planes is huge, we need relief. Come on Mike, please call the FAA and get them to stop. We encourage everyone to go online and make complaints. Call Massport every time they fly so low. Funny how it’s more at nighttime and not during the day so much. Call Massport every time you hear a plane at 617-561-3333. It’s important that everyone call when you hear those planes. Now we hear the only Alderman who is so vocal about it right now is Alderman At Large Rossetti. Maybe she will sponsor a proposal to the Alderman? Again, call 617-561-3333 every single one of us every time you hear a plane. Write down this number and call.

This week, again, we have a lot birthday greetings going out to some very important people here in the Ville and from the Ville. A big Happy Birthday to Paul McGlashing, who was recently married and is one of the Alibrandi Barber Shop’s specialists. A great guy. We wish him the very best. Tony should get him a nice cake! To a pair of very popular Somerville twins, Maureen Hart and Mary Hart (both married now with children of their own), we wish the both of them Happy Birthday. Time flies. A real nice guy, born, raised and went to school here, married and is here in the city all the time, the great Cliff Clark. A nice guy with two beautiful kids attending St. Clements. His mom lives on Highland Ave. A great family. Happy Birthday, Cliff, from everyone at The Times. Happy Birthday to Chad Triveri, formerly from here in East Somerville and now lives just over the line in Cambridge, and is a nice guy. We wish him the very best this week. To all the others out there whose birthdays we missed and are fans of The Times, we wish you a very happy birthday.

Our condolences go out to the family and friends of Florence “Flo” Papagno, who recently passed away. Florence was born and raised in East Boston, the daughter of the late Ralph and Catherine (Scarpa) Crisci. A Somerville resident for almost all of her life, Florence was an integral part of Somerville’s elder affairs effort. She was the past director of the Cross Street Elderly Housing Center and was, up to the time of her passing, working with Somerville’s Council on Aging. A devoted mother and grandmother, Florence was a good neighbor and friend to many. A funeral service was held this past Monday night at Dello Russo Funeral Home, 306 Main St., Medford. In lieu of flowers contributions may be sent in Florence’s name to the Somerville Council on Aging, 167 Holland St., Somerville, MA 02144.

We hear Roche Brothers wants to come to Somerville, but apparently not Winter Hill. They want the vacated Social Security offices in Davis Square. What are we going to do with this eyesore in Winter Hill? We heard they are going to put a Subway on Winter Hill across from three local establishments, and two of them very famous. Imagine living here in Somerville and going to a franchise sub shop when you have Leone’s right across the street and Mama Lisa’s few doors up. But they can’t find something to go in the old Star Market. Hmm … makes you almost think that Job Lot going in would have been better?

Another reminder for the annual John T. Forcellese Memorial Fund is once again kicking off its annual one-day golf tournament to be held on Saturday, September 6, at the Falmouth Country Club, Falmouth Ma. This marks the 14th year for the fundraiser which was started by Peter and his wife Janice Forcellese to raise money for scholarships in memory of their son John who passed away in 2000 from an eight year battle with cancer. Over the years they have given many scholarships to deserving students both here in Somerville and down in Falmouth. This past year they gave out 16 scholarships, thanks in large part to the many people who give their support both in sponsoring and in playing. They are now on Facebook as well as their own website, where you can learn more and maybe help out: www.johns-team.org. We are proud to be one of the sponsors this year. The Forcellese family do a great job with this fund that is named after their son John who suffered with cancer.

It’s here and opening this month. The grand opening of the Assembly Square Orange Line will swing open its doors sometime this month, so all the expensive stores at Assembly will now be easier to get to from the city.

Have you noticed all the different banks that have descended on the city this past year? It seems like the only local banks to survive all the mergers have been Middlesex Savings and Winter Hill Savings. Even Century Bank is still here with the original branch on Fellsway and Mystic. Rockland took over Central Cooperative but you wouldn’t know it with the windows boarded up. Hopefully, the city keeps our money in the local banks, or maybe they don’t? East Boston Savings, East Cambridge, Salem Five and how many more? We say local is better, and why not? And with Winter Hill, Middlesex Savings and Century Bank, they are truly local banks from Somerville.

Remember to support the employees of Market Basket and boycott MB until they are all back to work. All of these employees are hurting for their principals, which we applaud them for. So many times we hear horror stories of disloyalty and how no one has principals anymore. It’s truly remarkable to see this kind of loyalty.

We are sorry to hear of the recent passing of David R. Durnan, the retired Somerville High Track Coach, Guidance Counselor and teacher here in the city. We extend our deepest condolences to his wife, family and many friends he left behind. David was a teacher, guidance counselor, and track coach at Somerville High School until he retired in 2007. He was an inspiration to all that met him. David was a Medic in the Army National Guard for six years. He was a racecar driver, airplane pilot (occasional helicopter pilot), classic car collector, skier and runner. Additionally, David was a lifelong music lover and played both the banjo and ukulele. He supported this passion through his membership in the Boston Bluegrass Union and Ukulele Union of Boston. David also enjoyed his monthly card games with the “Card Sharks.” In their free time, David and Barbara would relax at their retreat house in Chesterfield.
