The Somerville Youth Softball Organization hosted their Kick Off Day Parade and Celebration Saturday April 27 at Trum Field.

SYSO launched their second season in partnership with the Youth and Recreation Department with a full day of activities that began with the presentation of teams, welcome, ceremonial first pitch, game and return of Major League Baseball’s Pitch Hit and Run competition.

Approximately 70 girls are participating through Instructional, 12 and under and 15 and under teams that are playing games in town and against neighboring towns of Medford and Malden.

The girls dressed in their uniforms of the Red, Purple, and Lightning, Thunder, Tornadoes and Tsunamis teams and marched around the field to the sounds of the Dropkick Murphy’s.

A nice crowd of fans and parents listened to a welcome from Sean Faeth, SYSO Vice President and from Bob Schofield, SYSO President about the Past, Present and Future of the exciting program that is moving toward opportunities for girls’ softball 365 days a year.  Mr. Schofield also identified and thanked number of volunteers and organizations that have help make the program possible the past two years.

On hand to throw out the first-pitch was Maureen Bastardi, Ward 1 City Alderman, which was followed by the home opener of the 15U Somerville Tsunami who hosted Malden.

A welcomed return of MLB Pitch, Hit and Run competition—35 girls and boys, ages ranging from 7-14 years of age—competed in the annual event. PHR was hosted by both SYSO and Somerville Little League.

Champions in pitching, hitting and running will all compete in the regional event on May 18, hosted by Canton Little League.

Almost any night of the week you can catch a game at Trum Field (home of the 15U) or Lincoln Park (home of the 12U) or Foss Park (home of Instructional).
