Rumor has it that former Ward 5 Alderman Joe Macaluso is moving back to the city. We heard even back to Ward 5. Former Alderman Ward 5 and DPW Commissioner Stan Koty is also moving back to Ward 5. Both are nice guys and, like the present Alderman in Ward 5, Sean O’Donovan, did a great job as Alderman for the residents of Ward 5. Combined they have been Alderman in Ward 5 over 25 years going back to the early 80’s.

Congratulations to Ward 4 Alderman Tony LaFuente and his lovely wife Helena, celebrating 25 years of marriage this past week. Twenty-five years and still in love. We think that’s great.

Happy Birthdays this week to our good friends here in the ‘Ville and elsewhere, the ever popular Janice Delory from the Mayor’s office. She’s a hard worker for the mayor and the city. Also, a good friend of ours who recently moved here from NJ, John Serpico, always has fun with his name. Our own Patti Norton who is home resting from two operations is celebrating her birthday this coming weekend. Celebrating his birthday and recent successful surgery is Ricky Hart. Our own Jimmy Del Ponte is celebrating this week as well and we wish him the best. Living now in Florida but still a ‘Villen is Diane Mahoney of the Highland Road fame. Also celebrating is Debbie Brune Cabral, the daughter of Eugene Brune and wife of Deputy Police Chief Mike Cabral. We wish her the very best. Patrice McClintic of Winter Hill is also celebrating her birthday this week. A good friend of many here at The News, Joan Campo McKenna is celebrating as well. Happy birthday to our good fried Ron Aylward, who is celebrating in the ‘Ville this week. To all these and many other July birthdays we wish everyone a great day for themselves.

Well, a small group of us had breakfast at the Neighborhood Rest. last week, and ate out in the patio. The service was great, the food was excellent and there was plenty of it. We hear that they are adding something delicious to their summer plans: ice cream on the patio from 5 to 9 p.m., and we hear its Brigham’s. Great ice cream and the best vanilla in the free world. Go Neighborhood!

So, we hear that the former Little Vinny’s is going to be a Brazilian Restaurant in Magoun Square. We also heard through the grapevine that the Paddock is for sale. We’re wondering if the Rosebud Diner is going to be on the block soon or has it already been sold? Galley may finally want to retire after many years of running a great diner. He has done wonders putting that fine little place back into shape. He also has spent a small fortune on restoring the Somerville landmark.

We hear that the new building on Grove and Summer is having difficulty renting to commercial tenants. We don’t understand if that’s true. It’s a nice looking building for its size.

Now, how’s this? A real mouth watering treat. Bourbon Chocolate Pecan Pie at Petsi Pies on Beacon Street. Another well-hidden Somerville gem.

It’s been a long time (since those 25 cent days) but the Somerville Theater sold out the opening night of The Dark Knight Rises and that includes the balcony. Local comic guys at Comicazzi bought three rows so their fans wouldn’t miss it. Isn’t a great idea?

M3, which replaced Alfresco on the corner of Cutter Avenue and Highland, is serving a unique Southern style menu in Davis Square.  If the packed house for brunch is any sign, it must be real good food.  It’s not easy to find catfish locally, but now you can.

Our sincere condolences to the family of Joe Emond on his recent passing. Joe was a very nice man and a very good friend to a few of us at The News and he will be missed by many.

ArtBeat in the city here this past weekend probably saw the largest turnout ever. Everyone had lots of fun with many booths, bands and items for everyone. What a great tradition started here in Somerville and getting stronger every year. Hats off to the city for a fine job putting this together.

This weekend the July installment of the City’s seasonal SomerStreets festival, “Seize the Summer,” will take place on Sunday, July 29 from noon to 4 p.m. between Walnut and Cedar Streets on Highland Ave. For this unique street fair, where “roads are closed to cars and open to you,” programming includes: a “Kidical Mass” bike ride to Davis Square; Cambridge Health Alliance health & fitness fair; family-friendly activities; health workshops including an American Red Cross blood drive; arts and craft vendors; live music, and more. SomerStreets is the centerpiece of the City’s Open Streets Initiative, which closes sections of roadways one Sunday per month to promote and support active living – walking, biking, running, dancing, and more.
