The snowstorm this past Monday was further proof that our DPW deserves another round of applause from us residents – the North/South streets were all plowed nicely as well as the main streets in short order. Only about 300 illegally parked cars were towed – which isn’t bad considering that the snow emergency was called around 4pm on Sunday.

Recently, former Mayor and present Registrar of Deeds Eugene Brune hosted the Somerville Lions annual “Speech Contest.” Arogya Khadka, a sophomore at Somerville High, was selected in the first round Рand then on January 8th, Rebecca Joy, a senior at Arlington Catholic (who will go to the finals), defeated her. Congratulations to both students for a job well done.

We heard that popular Police Captain Michael Cabral is being considered for a call to move up if Senator Obama wins the final election and becomes President. Sources tell us that he is being considered for work in the Obama admistration on Air Force One – Cabral was chosen in a poll because of his education, current voter status as a Democrat and by his police career track record/history with the department – we think he’s a good choice.

Well it appears our former Editor Neil McCabe did it again – he was scheduled for a Jury of Six Trial over in Cambridge District Court on Tuesday the 8th – and again he didn’t show up, so the court issued a warrant against him. Late on the 15th he showed up and had the default removed and got another trial date for January 29th – the trial in Somerville District Court was dismissed on December 5th.

Apparently some have questioned the visits to our web site – we have no problem if you’d like to stop by our office at 21A College Avenue and ask to see the Sitemeter/Typepad report which now has our site (during the week) at anywhere from 1,100 to 1,300 visits per day. The report is directly from Sitemeter/Typepad not from us, and we have no problem sharing it to the doubters.

Looks like the new Board of Alderman President, Dennis Sullivan, is planning on continuing what Alderman Bob Trane did last year as President – and it also looks like Alderman Bill White is once again being overlooked for the Finance Committee of the Board. And we thought Dennis and Bill were having coffee and making peace.

This makes the yucky story of the week – we have it on more than reliable sources that a customer had an accident (defecated) between the checkouts isles at Home Depot. It was a disgusting mess – apparently he couldn’t make it to the restroom – which surprised more then a few people when that happened right in front of them.

Just a reminder that the various Ward and City Democratic Ward Committee meetings are being held throughout the city on Saturday February 2nd at 10:30am to select delegates.
