Somerville man arrested in connection with Malden bank robbery

On Wednesday February 29  at approximately 2:50 p.m. officers of the Malden Police Department responded to a report of a bank robbery at the US Alliance Credit Union 1032 Eastern Avenue.    On arrival at the scene, it was learned that a white male entered the bank, showed a note to the teller and fled with an undetermined amount of cash.   According to witnesses, the perpetrator fled on a motor scooter and was wearing a black and white motorcycle helmet.

Officer Griffith, who was on patrol in the area, remembered seeing a motor scooter operating in the area approximately 15 minutes prior to the robbery.  Det. Montina spotted a motor scooter in front of a nearby business.  Further investigation revealed that the operator left the motor scooter and took a taxi to Somerville.  Detectives responded to Somerville and located the suspect, John Mellone at his home at 10 Montgomery Ave.  Mellone was arrested and charged with one count of unarmed robbery.

Officers participating in the investigation were Officers Griffith, Luongo, Wilson, Calhoun, Sgt. Bailey and Detectives, Montina, Headley, Mitchell, Gifford and DiSalvatore.  Somerville PD also assisted.

Mellone was arraigned today in Malden District Court and held on $3500 bail.
