Somerville man arrested in early morning rape

A 25-year-old Somerville man has been arrested by Somerville Police in connection with a sexual assault that occurred early Sunday morning near the Tufts University Campus.

Michael K. Mahoney was arrested this evening in Cambridge after Somerville Police obtained a warrant for his arrest.  Mahoney is charged with aggravated rape and kidnapping in connection with the assault.  He will be arraigned tomorrow morning in Somerville District Court. 

The victim reported that the suspect confronted her shortly before 6:00 a.m. on Sunday morning as she was walking in Somerville near College Avenue and Dearborn Road.  The suspect is alleged to have forced the victim to the rear of a nearby house where the assault occurred. 

Chief Anthony Holloway had high praise for the assault victim, who was able to provide crucial information that quickly led investigators to the identity of the suspect.  The Somerville Police Department, with assistance from the Tufts University Police Department and the Crime Scene Services Unit of the Massachusetts State Police, is continuing the investigation.
