Newstalk – January 11

On January 11, 2012, in Latest News, by The Somerville Times

First, we hear that Alderman Maryann Heuston is running for Registrar of Deeds then we hear she’s not and then we hear that she is definitely in the race for the seat held by Eugene Brune. She will be running along with local attorney and sister to the Mayor, Maria Curtatone. It’s for Southern Middlesex County Registrar of Deeds, which, in case you didn’t know, Middlesex County is the only county in the U.S. that has two Registrar of Deeds. Eugene Brune has served over 20 years as Registrar and leaves big shoes to fill, being such a popular guy. Either of these two women could do it.

Last week someone posted a remark about a small brawl in Ball Square on New Year’s Eve, so we decided to check it out. There was a police call but by the time they got there nothing happened, so it didn’t make the crime log. We heard that the owner of the establishment in Ball Square who hosted a private party found himself trying to break up a fight between two patrons, and in the process found himself being the victim of more than a few people hitting him so bad we heard he was whisked away to a nearby hospital. Of course, this is all speculation, but three different sources said it happened and the owner of the establishment hasn’t been seen at all in Ball Square, so who knows!

Thursday (this week), January 12, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the local Precinct Bar in Union Square, those rabble rousing Progressives Democrats here in the ‘Ville will be meeting to elect new officers and to establish an agenda and, they say, some surprises for the night. Now, we know that the PDS bloggers online wouldn’t advertise for us, since we are hardly on any of their web sites. You see, we like to think that we’re more progressive and open then they are. We wonder how many board members of SCATV and SCC will be present at the meeting? We are hoping, of course, that Marty gets re-elected as the head of the organization. We wish them well!

We encourage everyone to stop in and visit Dan Kallis, formerly of the old Dapper Dans at Assembly Square. He’s running the nice little coffee shop at the Armory at 191 Highland Avenue. The Armory Café is a nice place to drop in and relax for a few while reading our paper or going online to see The News. Dan runs a nice business and we need to encourage all local businesses like this which add to the city in a positive way. Besides, you never know who you might run into there. Our buddy Bob Publicover and David have been spotted there several times.

Condolences to the family of Frank Zonghetti who passed away this week. Frank was a gentleman and also a brother of our good friend Ray Zonghetti. Frank will be sadly missed by all those that knew him.

Was that Demo man spotted yelling at one of our Newstalkers recently at an event this past week? Seems he is still upset with us. We can’t figure out why he would be upset with us if we report something that happens?  Well, it’s a new year and maybe he will be a lot less frustrated this year. Who knows?

The Marine’s picture that someone left on the counter at the Winter Hill Post office is still there. They wish someone would recognize who it is and return it to the owner. It’s on the counter at the post office.
