Lyrical Somerville – January 4

On January 4, 2012, in Latest News, by The Somerville Times

A Creative Writing student in my class at Endicott College Taryn Moore wrote a poem titled “existing.”  And baby—sometimes it’s just good to get by with whatever gets you through the dark night of the soul.

existing.

i only want to exist;

consider me a name on a waiting list.

have my tears

become reptilian?

have i burned my ship to ash,

laid my white flag

in the smoldering remains?

have i watched my spirit rot,

set my mind adrift

on the moody reaching hands of the sea,

laid my body in the heavy arms

of funerary wood,

and have i then watched

the splinters of what remains

sink to the bottom together?

it’s all too dramatic.

if i could, i’d choose something

less emphatic.

i only want to exist.

it’s a mellow path, i don’t resist.

i only want to live alone

only body: muscle, skin and bone.

– Taryn Moore
