The View From Prospect Hill – December 14

On December 14, 2011, in Latest News, by The Somerville Times

We have been wondering lately why it is that long established traditions, in some instances spanning hundreds of years, are becoming revised and “improved” by certain self-appointed arbiters of social propriety.

We are particularly vexed by the now commonplace practice of replacing references to all things pertaining to “Christmas” to that of the “holidays” – as if the word “Christmas” itself has somehow taken on an odious meaning, as inconceivable as that may be.

We understand that this is a nation that holds dear the rights of free expression and freedom to worship as we all please. By that very fact it does not seem reasonable to alter long-standing traditions based in one faith in order to avoid ideological collisions with those who follow other beliefs. Nor is there an issue involving inclusion of others of different religious affiliations.

At the very heart of what most people consider the Spirit of Christmas is a commitment to openly invite everyone – regardless of their political, social, and religious beliefs – to share a time of celebration of peace and solidarity of purpose. To try to make the world a little better place to be, if even for a short time, for everyone.

This time of year may be thought of as the “holidays” by some. But we ask that our long-held traditions of Christmas not be re-named for the sake of some misguided, overly reactionary form of political correctness. Please, show some respect for our rights too.
