Calling all DJs. In honor of Somerville native Bobby “Boris” Pickett and his world-famous song “Monster Mash,” the City will be holding a Monster Mashed Up DJ competition on Saturday, October 23, from 4:00-6:00 p.m. on Somerville Avenue in Union Square.

Each selected DJ will be given a 20-minute spin session and will need one mashup that includes the classic Pickett version of “Monster Mash.” The competition will be part of the City-sponsored SomerStreets celebration organized in partnership with Union Square Main Streets, which will close down Somerville Avenue from Union Square to Porter Square. Bands, a craft fair, a costume parade, safe trick-or-treating, chainsaw pumpkin carving, a cornhole competition, and recreational and family activities will be part of the festivities.

Local businesses have organized an Oktoberfest in Union Square from 1:00-6:00 p.m. Bull McCabe’s, Macchu Picchu and Sally O’Brien’s will be offering beer gardens and live music.

To compete in the mashup competition, DJs should email their name, contact info and two sample MP3’s of their work (or links to websites with work or places you perform) to Greg Jenkins, Director of the Somerville Arts Council, at gjenkins@somervillema.gov.

The deadline for submissions is Oct. 20. All DJs selected to perform will receive a $50 honorarium and the winner will receive a $100 gift certificate from Union Square’s new Somerville Grooves vinyl shop at 26 Union Square.
