Somerville’s got talent! On Saturday, November 26, 2011, 4:00 to 7:00 PM at the Somerville Theatre, Davis Square, don’t miss the entertainment event of the season. The Somerville Public Schools music department presents a Tom Taylor production, Holiday in the Ville. The program is a benefit for the SPS music department and will feature the talent of former as well as present Somerville High School students.

If you attended Somerville High School and were a member of the chorus, band or orchestra, or have independent talent and a desire for the stage, please join us for this gala. Especially for this program, an alumni chorus, alumni band, and alumni orchestra are being organized to present three wonderful community ensembles. All Somerville High School alumni are invited to become part of one or more of these performance groups. Each member of each ensemble will be provided with music to preview and there will be one rehearsal prior to the performance. “This will be an absolutely enjoyable and entertaining opportunity which will round out a superb program of variety offerings by alumni and students,” says Rick Saunders, director of the Somerville Public Schools music department.

Please contact Richard Saunders if you are able to join in performing. You may email Mr. Saunders (rsaunders@k12.somerville.ma.us ), write him in care of Somerville High School, Highland Avenue, Somerville, MA 02143 or call (617) 625-6600 (ask for high school music department and leave your name, telephone number and address).

Spread the word, and mark your calendar to attend, whether as performer or audience. Ticket information will be announced soon and tickets will be available in advance or at the door.

The Somerville Music Department has continued and flourished during times of budget crises that have threatened arts programs in the public schools nationally. This has been possible because of the commitment of our city to arts education, which it considers as critical to the success of our young people as the other academic subjects. The community support that the people of Somerville consistently provide is the complementary component that has enabled broad-based arts education in the Somerville Public Schools to thrive. The fundraising goal of the benefit concert Holiday in the Ville is to provide expanded music instruction within the curricula of Somerville Public Schools as well as extracurricular opportunities for greater numbers of students.
