The celebration of the wedding of Alison M. Koty to Mark J. Fernandez will take place this coming Saturday in Falmouth. A lot of Somerville residents, family, and friends will be there to wish them well and a long life. We here at The News wish them as well a long and happy life together.

****************

Also getting married this Saturday is our good friend David Mata to Carla Bonlla. We wish them a long and happy life together. David is new here in Somerville from out of state and he and Carla have come to love living here in the ‘Ville.

The Ward 4 open seat race for Alderman is heating up, and some interesting observations of late have been made. Several people were on the Facebook page of Christine Barber and there was an interesting post on her attending the Somerville Remembers 9/11 ceremony with procession and moment of silence. The comment indicated that she was there and how nice of an event it was (see dated 9/15). We could have sworn that she was not there. Oh, her buddies Rebecca and Carl were there as well as her opponent Tony Lafaunte was there, but if Christine was there we are trying to find at least two people who say they saw her, because we can’t. Again, we asked a lot of our Newstalkers out there that did attend and no one saw her. Maybe it’s the person she hired in Stoneham to do her Facebook page that was there?

Condolences to the Lynch Family here in Somerville as long time resident and very well known lady Anna (Ryan) Lynch passed away this week. She was 98 years old. She left a large family, not to mention a devoted son, Joe Lynch. She joins her husband Joseph P. Sr. who passed on not too long ago. Our sincere sympathies go out to the entire Lynch family for their loss.

Somerville Rotary is having their annual fundraiser for this year on Wednesday, October 5, at the Prince House of Pizza in Saugus. Lots of fun every year and a huge success. This year the cost is $25 and includes unlimited pizza and salad, plus the show. They are also selling the ad book space for local businesses. If you’d like to go or place and ad notify the President Jeannie Scarpa at Century bank here in Somerville, or email her: JScarpa@centurybank.com. Somerville Rotary raises money all year long and contributes to all sorts of local charities and organizations.

Also passing this week was Diane Chamberlain, formerly of Somerville. She was waked at Doherty’s FH this past Tuesday. Our sympathy to the family. The Chamberlains were a huge fixture here in Somerville for many generations and are still well known.

Very nice enjoyable evening last Saturday along the Mystic River with the fireworks. A good crowd and great fireworks. Congratulations to Federal Realty for the show.

Great news: our good friend Bob Publicover is home and is fighting to get back on his feet after the serious and major surgery he had. He’s feeling better, been on Facebook, and he’s been sending out emails to his friends and well wishers. If you’d like to say hi and wish him well through these tough times contact him at bobpublicover@aol.com

A huge Happy Birthday to Ida Assolino of West Somerville who turned 99 years old this week. Ida is unbelievable. She makes the best cakes and brownies and can be seen every week at the Elderly Center on Holland Street, not to mention she still is seen  weekly down at Market Basket on Somerville Avenue getting her exercise up and down those isles (all those that shop there will know what we mean). We wish her well and a great day. We’re looking for a big bash next year on her 100th.

Joey Lacey of Jenny’s Pizza in Charlestown (great Pizza and best Hamburgers around) was sworn into office this past Saturday night at the Masonic Lodge here in Somerville (King Solomon’s Lodge). It was standing room only to a packed hall. He and his line of officers were installed and a beautiful catered dinner followed. He’s asked us to let everyone know he’s planning on an open house for the building and lodge on Saturday, October 15. All the Paul Revere jewels as well as other artifacts of the lodge will be on display for the public.

Don’t forget the Fluff festival coming up this Saturday in Union Square. Every year this event has attracted a larger crowd. This year shouldn’t be any different. The organizers are planning a fun filled event this year, so don’t miss it.

Although not a resident of Somerville, Sue Welch of Medford, who has been so very active here in the city both with volunteering her time every week at the Little Sisters on Highland and works as a Real Estate agent at the Norton Group, just recently came back from an awesome 3-week trip to Alaska with her family. She loved it, enjoyed the cruise up and down the coast, and came back energized. This was her first vacation in a long time and was paid for by her son as a present to his mother and family.

Happy Birthday to our good friend Martin Poligone, who is a great guy and devotes most of his time as a volunteer mediator for the Attorney General’s hot line helping our elderly. Also Happy Birthday to Peter Acres and Ken Weber as well. A big Happy Birthday to our very good friend David Lebhan of Somerville. Even though he’s from Scranton PA, he’s picked Somerville as his new home. We wish him and all our birthday ‘Villens this week a Happy Birthday.

Time flies fast, not just here but everywhere. Congratulations to Stephen Post and Ginny Post, long time and well known Somerville residents. They became Grandparents for the first time this past week. A beautiful 8.2 lbs. baby girl named Madeleine Maeve. We can’t forget about their Great Grandmother now, Kay Post. The parents of baby, Madeleine Katie and Nick Repucci, are doing great and are getting ready to take shifts getting up at 4 a.m.

****************

Our good friends Larry and his wife Susan Callahan Post are celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary this week here in the ‘Ville. We wish them another 25 years of happiness and more.

Sad news to hear that our friends at the Mount Vernon Restaurant recently had to close down their two North Shore locations because of the economy. It’s hitting everyone. We wish the entire Henry Family the best in the old Somerville location. Closing down and cutting costs is what businesses have to do when there is no income. Maybe if the government did the same we might be in a different situation. We hope and pray for all those that recently lost their jobs. We hear that over 60 individuals lost them due to lack of business. We hope everyone here in Somerville supports the Mount Vernon Restaurant. Probably the largest private restaurant employer here in Somerville. They have great food and you can’t beat the prices.

Congratulations to Somerville’s own Ed Ciampa who received the Lifetime Membership award for his achievements and dedication to the City of Somerville from    Somerville Lions Club and Lions Club International last week. Ed has always been the backbone and the driving force of the club and he’s always doing good deeds for others. We here at The News salute you as well for your dedication and service to the club and the city as a whole.

Welcome back from a great trip to England these past few weeks to the entire Johansen family of School Street. They went to visit merry old England and Irving, who is 88 years old, told us he and his lovely wife Peggy enjoyed every day. Rumor has it that they had tea and crumpets with the Queen. Irving decided to retire recently and enjoy himself. So, after many years of crossing guard up at Powerhouse Blvd., he’s decided to retire. He sends his best to all those morning honkers and wavers fans. He’s doing good, just retiring. We think, knowing Irving, that he will get deeply involved into something local…stay tuned.

****************

Also back from a trip abroad, our good friend Peter Mee, a recent Law graduate who passed the bar not too long ago. He visited with one of his friends Ireland.   He had a great time and he reported back to us that yes, the Giant Causeway up in Northern Ireland was awesome as well as all the other counties and cities they visited.

A follow-up on Richard Hart, well known lifelong resident (10 kids and 20 grandkids  with Mary) is home and doing fine after his three weeks in and out of the hospital. If you’re visiting him don’t bring chocolate donuts. He isn’t a big fan. Some of us here at Newstalk found out the hard way.
