Somerville schedules multiple meetings to educate public about October zero-sort launch.

During the month of September, City officials will be hosting meetings all over Somerville to educate the public about the October switch to zero-sort recycling.

The City ran a successful zero-sort pilot in part of Ward 5 starting last November and now plans to take that program citywide. Residents who receive City trash collection services will be given a free cart in which they can place all their recyclable material. It is a more convenient system with no sorting or separating necessary, and it has been proven to dramatically increase recycling rates.

Delivery of new carts will begin the week of October 10th and zero-sort pickup will start the week of October 17th. The informational meetings will give residents the opportunity to ask more detailed questions about the program, including the cart delivery plan and exactly what materials are recyclable.

Dates and locations for the meetings are:

Saturday Meetings
Saturday, Sept. 10, 11 a.m.-noon, West Somerville School Cafeteria
Saturday, Sept. 17, 11 a.m.-noon, Argenziano School Cafeteria
Saturday, Sept. 24, 11 a.m.-noon, Capuano School Cafeteria

Weeknight Meetings
MONDAY PICKUP Monday, Sept. 12, 6:30-7:30 p.m., West Somerville School Cafeteria
FRIDAY PICKUP Tuesday, Sept. 13, 6:30-7:30 p.m., Cross St. Senior Center
WEDNESDAY PICKUP Wednesday, Sept. 14, 6:30-7:30 p.m., Visiting Nurses Association
THURSDAY PICKUP Thursday, Sept. 15, 6:30-7:30 p.m., SHS Library
TUESDAY PICKUP Tuesday, Sept. 20, 6:30-7:30 p.m., Kennedy School Community Lounge

Residents are invited to any of the above meetings, however the City has conveniently arranged for at least one meeting inside the area for each of the recycling pick-up days.  Two daytime meetings for seniors and three ESL meetings (in Spanish, Portuguese and Haitian Creole) also will be scheduled.

Residents unable to attend the meetings can have their questions answered by calling 311 or electronically contacting 311(email, City website, Facebook, Twitter, iPhone app).
