The View From Prospect Hill – July 20

When it comes to discussion over plans to develop or revitalize a particular section of our community, one thing is certain. Unanimity of opinion is never even close to being in the picture.

Such is the case now as state and city officials sift through the facts, figures, and factions involved in the proposed changes to the Inner Belt-Brickbottom districts.

Predictably, as many points of view exist on the issue as there are players in the matter. From the mightiest on high to the average Joe on the street, one and all seem to hold to their own particular vision of what may be the best options as plans move, however slowly, forward.

The question now is, how can we arrive at a fair consensus of opinion, based upon factual information, and effectively move forward in a meaningful way? We must have learned a few things during the long protracted years of bickering and compromise associated with the Assembly Square project. Will it be possible to avoid as much wasted time and effort?

Only time will tell how well the art of compromise can be practiced by the powers that be, while hopefully doing what is best for the residents of the city. This project can become a political work of art, but it could also sink into a mire of stagnation and incertitude.

As art lovers, we hope for the best.
