A man who was detained on Derby Street by Somerville Police Department Drug Control Unit officers last Thursday was later identified as the prime suspect in a residential break-in and theft, according to police reports.

While being questioned by officers, Matthew McComiskey, 31, allegedly dropped a cigarette package to the ground. Police said that the package contained a hypodermic syringe, as well as eight gold rings and a gold ankle bracelet.

Another Somerville Police officer who was investigating a break-in and theft involving missing items that matched those found at the scene was radioed and he joined the other officers in questioning McComiskey.

The victims of the theft had named McComiskey as a likely suspect, according to police, as he had at one time resided with them, while several incidents involving missing property was noted by the residents.

McComiskey was arrested and charged with receiving stolen property.
