Ice hockey is an immensely popular sport in the Boston area. And not just for guys. There’s a professional women’s team (Fleet), dozens of high school and college teams, plus even more youth teams and recreational adult teams – all for girls and women. Yet, the misconception that ice hockey is overly violent and more appropriate for boys persists. People often don’t realize that checking is prohibited in all girls and women’s hockey except at the professional level. Girls of all backgrounds are welcome to get a chance to play a sport that’s so beloved in Boston.
