Manipulo at SomArt@ the Hive, October 16 – 17

Zero Point Arts and Zoe Dance presents TALVEZ, a contemporary dance company based in Quito, Ecuador, for a fall residency centered on choreographer Marcela Correa’s interactive work “Manipulo”

Special international dance showcase from Ecuador

“Manipulo” transforms the stage into a living Japanese garden. Instead of raked sand and still stones, audiences find tables, dancers, and loose stones waiting to be placed. As audience members move the stones — arranging them, testing their weight, deciding where they belong — the dancers respond in kind, and the sound of stone meeting table is captured by contact microphones and turned into live music. The pace, the shape of the space, and the relationships between performers all shift depending on what the audience chooses to do, so no two performances unfold the same way twice.

This fall, TALVEZ tours to Somerville to restage the piece with local dancers under Correa’s direction. “At TALVEZ, we believe that dance is not simply something to be watched, but something that can be experienced and created together. MANÍPULO invites audiences to become active participants in the performance, making choices that directly shape what happens onstage. Bringing this work to Somerville and recreating it with dancers from the Boston community opens another exciting layer of dialogue. It is an opportunity for artists from different backgrounds to listen, play, take risks, and discover something together in real time,” – Marcela Correa, founder and artistic director of TALVEZ cuerpo_movimiento.
