As a city that has historically embraced peoples and cultures from all over the world, Somerville is no less welcoming of the Hispanic community in all its varied and vibrant forms.

As such, Mayor Jake Wilson, Somerville’s Office of Immigrant Affairs (SOIA), with support from the City’s Division of Equity and Belonging and the Somerville Community Corporation (SCC) are currently busy celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month, now through October 15.

Historically, September 15 marks the independence anniversaries of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua.

A number of special events are scheduled throughout the course of the celebration, including:

Latin American and Caribbean Heritage Month celebration, Sunday, October 25, 2026, from 2 to 5 p.m. at Somerville High School. This special event provides an opportunity for our community to come together and celebrate the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of Latin American and Caribbean communities in Somerville.

This free community event will feature music, dance, movement, and a wide selection of food and refreshments (such as Brazilian cheese bread and Haitian griot).

Local advocacy organizations and community groups will also be on hand to share resources and connect with residents. Bring your family, meet your neighbors, and celebrate the cultures and communities that help make Somerville home.
