At 2:57 a.m. Tuesday, September 8, the Somerville Fire Department responded to 37 Dartmouth St. for a reported fire. The building is three stories and contains five residential units. Upon arrival, firefighters found heavy fire conditions in a first-floor apartment with flames coming out of a window and spreading over the building’s exterior to the second floor.
A first-floor occupant jumped out of a window prior to firefighters’ arrival and was transported to a hospital to be treated for injuries believed to be non-life-threatening. Firefighters, hearing screams for help, assisted a second-floor occupant from the building through heavy smoke conditions. Two cats were also located and removed to safety.
All occupants of the building have been displaced and are being assisted by the Red Cross and Somerville City services. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
