Residents can review and comment on updates through July 3
The City of Somerville is inviting residents to review and comment on proposed updates to its electricity aggregation plan for Somerville Community Choice Electricity (CCE). The 30-day public review period is open through July 3, 2026.
Somerville’s Community Choice Electricity Program
Somerville CCE is the City’s official electricity supply program. It helps provide more stable electricity supply prices for Somerville residents and businesses and supports the City’s transition to cleaner energy. The program’s current electricity supply contract runs through January 2028.
Most electricity customers in Somerville are automatically enrolled in CCE, including renters and homeowners. Customers can check their enrollment status, opt in, opt out, or switch between CCE electricity products at any time with no fees or penalties at cce.somervillema.gov.
What’s an Aggregation Plan?
The aggregation plan explains how Somerville’s electricity program is structured and operated. The City’s original aggregation plan was approved by the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities (DPU) in April 2017.
In July 2024, the DPU issued new rules for municipal electricity aggregation plans, giving municipalities more local authority and requiring more public transparency about how their programs operate.
The proposed updates to Somerville’s aggregation plan would bring the City’s plan in line with the new DPU guidelines.
The revised plan would also:
-
Give the City more flexibility to offer new electricity supply options in the future
-
Change the default product for eligible low-income residents to “Somerville Basic,” the lowest-cost CCE option
-
Strengthen annual performance reporting
-
Allow the City to make future plan updates without a lengthy DPU approval process
The change for eligible low-income residents is intended to support both of the City’s goals for the program: expanding renewable energy and keeping electricity as affordable as possible.
Residents can review the revised plan and submit comments at cce.somervillema.gov. Comments may also be emailed to support_ma@goodenergy.com with the subject line “Somerville Plan Comments.”
The public review period closes July 3, 2026.
