Early morning fire in Somerville

At approximately 2:57 a.m. on Tuesday, June 9 the Somerville Fire Department responded to a fire at 162 Broadway, a three story building containing six apartment units and four commercial properties, which use the addresses of 160-166 Broadway.

Upon arrival, firefighters found an active fire on the second floor with flames coming out a front window and starting to spread upward. Upon assessment of the scene a second alarm was sounded. Firefighters were successful in containing the fire to a second floor apartment at 162 although smoke and water damage resulted in other areas of the apartment block.
At least six residents were displaced as a result of the fire, and one business suffered heavy water damage. The RedCross and Somerville agencies are assisting displaced individuals.
One Somerville firefighter was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. All building occupants were able to safely evacuate. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation
