Project aims to improve safety on Broadway and reimagine intersection

More than 500 community members have shared their perspectives on the segment of Broadway that runs through Somerville’s Magoun Square—among the feedback were concerns about long crossings, congestion, speeding, red light running, and more.

Now, the City’s Mobility Division is hosting an open house to share preliminary design concepts that seek to address these concerns and provide a safer, more comfortable experience for everyone using the street.

Join the May 6 Broadway Magoun Open House

  • Date/Time: Wednesday, May 6 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
  • Location: Arthur D. Healey School Cafeteria, 5 Meacham Street.
  • Info: Community members will have the opportunity to dive into the details of the concept designs and talk directly to the project team about their questions and comments.

Redesign Highlights
Along with repaving the roadway and rebuilding the sidewalks on Broadway between Winchester Street and Central Street, the new concept designs include:

  • Safer more, comfortable crosswalks
  • Protected bike lanes
  • Bus rider experience improvements
  • Parking regulation changes
  • Accessibility improvements
  • Changes to traffic operations at signalized intersections
  • New space to add trees and greenery plantings

In addition to the community feedback and data gathered, this effort is informed by Somerville’s commitment to Vision Zero (a commitment to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injury) and the City’s Bicycle Network Plan (a roadmap to expanding bicycle safety and features across the city).

More Info and Other Opportunities to Engage

If community members cannot attend the open house, there will be multiple other ways to share feedback such as through an online feedback survey, a virtual office hour, street outreach pop-ups, and more.

More information about the project and opportunities to share feedback is available at somervillema.gov/broadwaymagoun
