What the Thorns Remember
I loved you

Jonathon Nimmons
on our third call
I hated you
dividing your smiles
the Bougainvillea
flowering over
our fingers
questions
opened wounds
with blood leaping
from our nails
deleting numbers
tears shepherding
new trails in the grass
maybe autumn
as magenta petals
fall
into hands loose
in a polaroid
my mind snapped
as you folded us
into a pocket
where outlines
of a bar shutting
lifted our kiss
into song
drunk slurs
shading this frame
my roots reach
for a wet brush
to colour in
a dark rose
sharper teeth.
