‘Latino Excellence on the Hill’ coincides with Hispanic Heritage Month celebration
Somerville Public Schools (SPS) celebrates Jennifer Ochoa, Basic Needs & Housing Support Social Worker at the Somerville Family Learning Collaborative, who was recently honored as a leader in the Latino community by the Massachusetts Black and Latino Legislative Caucus.
Ms. Ochoa was among those honored at the Latino Excellence on the Hill event at the Massachusetts State House on September 25, a celebration of the transformational work of Latinos throughout Massachusetts. She was nominated by Rep. Erika Uyterhoeven of the 27th Middlesex district for her work serving the public school system, as well as her dedication to the Somerville Museum.
“I take pride in working for this district,” Ms. Ochoa said upon receiving the accolade. “I am thankful for the work I do every day. This award is a reflection of all of us, and our collective work.”
The honor comes in the midst of Hispanic Heritage Month, which began on September 15 and runs through October 15. Nearly 40% of Somerville Public Schools students identify as Hispanic.
“Jenn has consistently demonstrated exceptional leadership, an unwavering commitment to equity, and a deeply collaborative and innovative approach to supporting families,” said Ruth Santos, Director of the Somerville Family Learning Collaborative. “She embodies the spirit of the award, and is exceptionally deserving of this honor.”
