Visual Artists often use language when speaking about their work that mimics the vocabulary of musicians: Composition, Improvisation, Collaboration, and Repetition. Creative endeavors of all kinds pull inspiration from the rhythms and movements around us. Artists tune into the pulse of life, whether it comes from the motion of the city, the tranquility of the country, or the noise inside our heads. The Music of Art brings together two painters, a printmaker, and a mixed media artist, each expressing their connection to music in their own unique way.

Participating artists:

Linda Clave, www.lindaclavearts.com, paints during live performances, using the rhythms and tempos of the compositions as a collaborative element in her visual expression.

Robert Goss listens to improvised “free Jazz” while working in his studio, using his own visual improv process, taking an object and altering it with no preconceived idea, no sketch or model. Sometimes the pieces are never “finished” but are always a work in process.

Iku Oseki, www.ikuoseki.com, draws inspiration for her paintings from concerts and street musicians.

Her visual imagery connects with the sound as well as the performers. Some of the compositions evoke a dreamlike state, conjuring up the feelings she experiences while the notes are in her head.

Annie Silverman, www.anniesilverman.com, calls herself an improvisational composer, not of music with notes and sound, but with images, colors, patterns, and form. Her process of creating multi-layered prints with carved woodblocks feels musical to her because, like hearing music live, it happens in real time on her printing press.
