Stephanie Estrela, senior code enforcement inspector from the Inspectional Services Department (ISD), was commended with a citation at the City Council meeting on August 28, for her leadership and support during the triple-decker house fire on Wheatland Street that displaced 27 residents.
On Sunday, July 6, the Somerville Fire Department responded to a blaze at a 3-story residence located at 81 Wheatland St., which spread to the adjacent property. Councilor Clingan explained that there was an urgent need for coordination as onlookers were gathering in the street while the building was burning.
“At that critical moment, Health Inspector Estrela arrived on the scene and quickly took charge,” said Councilor Clingan. “She organized residents away from the danger zone and out of the intense sun, gathering them under a nearby tree while firefighters continued operations.”
Estrela accounted for all the displaced residents despite language barriers and worked swiftly to collect information about the victims amid the chaotic scene.
“Inspector Estrela’s communication remained clear, professional, and effective,” said Councilor Clingan. “Her actions provided vital support for both residents and emergency personnel, ensuring that victims received assistance in a timely and organized manner. Inspector Estrela’s leadership and professionalism exemplifies the City of Somerville’s commitment to public safety and community well-being.”
Estrela has been serving the City of Somerville for 16 years in various positions, explained Mayor Katjana Ballantyne. “It’s extremely important that city staff get to be recognized for the skills and hard work that they bring to the roles every day. And I’m glad to see that Stephanie is getting recognized.”
An excerpt from the citation reads: “Stephanie’s proactive leadership prioritized safety and well-being and provided critical support to both residents and emergency personnel.”
Estrela accepted the citation and thanked Mayor Ballantyne and the City Councilors.
“When there are fires and there are emergencies, it is critical for ISD Health to be on scene,” Estrela said. “We at ISD Health are looking forward to helping any residents who are in need of assistance.”
