On August 7, 2025, in Latest News, by The Somerville Times

August 7-9

The feel-gloom event of the summer is back. This week, Somergloom Festival turns five, and they are celebrating with three nights of heavy riffs and an eclectic lineup of gloomy artists, featuring SUMAC, Body Void, The Keening, Morne, and more!

The festival kicks off Thursday, August 7 at Deep Cuts in Medford, MA, featuring GHUTS from NYC, Gloom alum LesothoMain Era, and heavy shoegazers Slow Quit

Friday, August 8, at Crystal Ballroom in Somerville, MA, features a crushing headline set from Vermont sludge titans Body Void, making their triumphant return after headlining year one, and the Boston area debut of The Keening, ex-SubRosa front person Rebecca Vernon‘s gothic folk solo project. Rounding out the dark folk side of Friday is RI’s Vudu Sister, and on the heavy side, Maine’s Lepra and Boston’s Tears From a Grieving Heart.

Post-metal supergroup SUMAC headlines the final night Saturday, August 9, at Crystal Ballroom, ending their tour with NYC-based “immigrindcore” band Chepang. The bill also features Boston’s long-running doom band Morne, Puerto Rico-based MOTHS, NYC-based Cowardice, and locals A Monolithic Dome and Chainlacing.

A note from JJ Gonson

Holy bats! JJ Gonson here. Somergloom Festival is back for its fifth and most ambitious year yet! With your support, what began in a parking lot in 2021 has grown into a multi-day, multi-venue celebration of the underground heavy music scene. We’re bringing you the best of doom, sludge, black metal, shoegaze, gothic folk, and more….. All in a dark and gorgeous fury, just for you.

For five years, Somergloom has been a true labor of love supported by a small but mighty crew who have volunteered their time, shared their talents, and literally cheered us on every step of the way. Some of you have been at almost every show for five years, and that truly blows my mind. Just – thank you. Thanks for sticking with us. Thanks for every time you bought a ticket, invited a friend, talked up the fest, hung a flyer, posted a photo, reposted a reel – it is not easy to keep a grassroots underground music festival going in this town, and your support means more than I can say.

When we say we could not have done this without you – we really, really mean it.

As a small thank you, we are sharing our special 25% off discount code: GARGOYLE

We hope you’ll use it to snag a ticket for an extra night, invite a friend, or just introduce your cool neighbor to our little fest.

ABOUT SOMERGLOOM

Founded by Stephen LoVerme and co-produced with JJ Gonson (ONCE Somerville), Somergloom is a love letter to music that’s introspective, ambitious, and just a little bit sad. It’s a space to gather, feel deeply, and connect through the power of the almighty riff. Now in its fifth year and supported in part by the Somerville Arts Council, Somergloom has hosted over 40 bands at six venues and continues to grow as a platform for community, catharsis, and sound.
