At 12:49 p.m. on Sunday, July 6, the Somerville Fire Department was notified of a house fire at 81 Wheatland St. Upon arrival, firefighters found heavy fire conditions, which had engulfed the rear porches of the 3-story residence. Fire had also spread to the 2.5-story residence at 85 Wheatland St. and had melted exterior siding on the house at 78 Fellsway West.
All occupants were able to exit safely, and no injuries were reported by occupants or firefighters. The fire spread into all floors and the roof of 81 Wheatland St., resulting in extensive damage. The home was determined to be uninhabitable. The home at 85 Wheatland St. was also deemed uninhabitable as firefighters needed to open walls and ceilings to check for fire spread. A total of 26 residents have been displaced from both homes.
Four alarms were sounded due to the high heat and need for additional assistance at the scene, which brought firefighters from multiple nearby communities. In addition to all Somerville apparatus, the Arlington, Boston, Cambridge, Chelsea, Everett, Lexington, Malden, Medford, and Revere fire departments provided mutual aid at the scene or station coverage. Cataldo Ambulance and the Boston Sparks Association also responded to provide rehab for firefighters. The cause of the fire is under investigation by Somerville Fire, Somerville Police, and State Police fire investigators assigned to the State Fire Marshal’s office.
An illegally stored propane tank was located on the rear porch of 81 Wheatland St. The storage and use of propane is illegal on or inside any residential property, and the property owner was cited. Residents are urged to notify the Fire Department at 617-623-1500 if they see the use of any grills on rear porches or roofs.
