María Del Castillo Sucerquia, born in Barranquilla, Colombia in 1997, is a bilingual poet proficient in both Spanish and English. She has translated poet  Marc Goldfinger’s poem WHAT I DO into Spanish.

Marc Goldfinger

WHAT I DO

for Brenda, but she never knew it

As she drives

she places the inhaler in her
mouth, fires a puff deep, holds
her breath

until she can breathe again.
I still carry a Zippo, light
her cigarettes, watch my
heart melt in the shadow
of the flame. It is an old

lighter. At a Rainbow Festival
someone gave it to me
for a six-pack of beer. I still
carry it, light her cigarettes,
fall in love, look into the dark

window of her car
when she takes
out the inhaler. There are
things I can’t change. So

I write poetry instead.

—  Marc Goldfinger

LO QUE HAGO

para Brenda, pero ella nunca lo supo

Mientras conduce,

se pone el inhalador en
la boca, dispara una bocanada profunda
y contiene el aliento

hasta que logra volver a respirar.
Todavía llevo un Zippo, enciendo
sus cigarrillos, veo mi corazón
derretirse a la sombra
de la llama. Es un encendedor

viejo. En un Rainbow Festival
alguien me lo cambió
por un six-pack de cervezas. Todavía
lo llevo, enciendo sus cigarrillos,
me enamoro, miro por la ventana

oscura de su auto
cuando saca el inhalador.
Hay cosas que no
puedo cambiar, así que

en lugar de eso escribo poesía.
