A Friendly place

At the corner of Cedar St. and Highland there’s a bank. It used to be Friendly’s Ice Cream shop. I can still taste the lime Rickeys and vanilla cokes not to mention the Fribbles. Back in the 70’s it was a great hangout especially after Somerville high events.  I’d like to share the following memories of that Friendly’s location.

“My favorite was the Swiss Chocolate Almond Sundae and of course any number of Fribbles.”

“One of my favorites, best French fries and grilled corn muffin.”

“Cheeseburger on the set up with those crinkle-cut fries and a Fribble!”

“My wife worked there back in ‘71, claims she was let go for not being friendly, lol.”

“I remember I was a frequent flyer going to Friendlies after a basketball game.”

“Shrimp salad sandwich 65 cents and a fountain coke 10 cents.”

“We would shovel snow until we had enough money to go get a hot cocoa.”

“That was my hangout all through high school in the early 70’s and, of course, the place we all went after basketball and hockey games.”

“My husband and I used to go there and get the tuna melt. Great memories there.”

“We called it Saint Friendly’s. We skipped church and went for a with our collection $.”

I always think of Friendly’s when I drive by the bank. There was also a Dairy Queen down the street on Cedar. The old Friendly’s will go down on the list of Somerville’s favorite hang outs.
