The Tufts University Department of Music presents Time’s Echo: A Conversation about Art and Memory with author and critic Jeremy Eichler in the Distler Performance Hall at the Perry and Marty Granoff Music Center on Wednesday, February 14, at 6:00 p.m.

Times Echo: The Second World War, The Holocaust, and the Music of Remembrance by Jeremy Eichler, chief classical music critic of The Boston Globe, is a new genre-blurring book on art, war and memory that has been named History Book of the Year by The Sunday Times of London; praised as “the outstanding music book of this and several years” by the TLS; and hailed as “a masterpiece of nonfiction writing” by the jury of the UK’s premier nonfiction prize. Published by Knopf in 2023 yet “already classic” (Samuel Moyn, Yale University) it proposes new ways of listening to music as culture’s memory, and learning to hear between its notes the resonances of what another era has written, heard, dreamed, hoped, and mourned.

Join faculty from across A&S to explore the broader implications of the book’s arguments, its literary style, and its spirited defense of humanism and the arts for many forms of artistic expression and ways of deepening how we think about the legacies of war, the memory of culture, and the renewed promise of art for our lives today. www.timesecho.com. The event will include performances of excerpts from Olivier Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time (1941) and Kareem Roustom’s Aleppo Songs (2016).

Opening reception preceding the event from 5:30-6:00. Co-sponsored by Office of the Vice Provost for Research, the Toupin-Bolwell fund of Arts and Sciences, Center for the Humanities at Tufts, Tisch College-Civic Studies, and the Departments of Music, Sound, and Culture, History, German, Judaic Studies, and International Literary, and Cultural Studies.
