The SMEA Union will be hosting a clothing drive at their stand during the upcoming Jingle Bell Race on Sunday, December 17, in Statue Park to support the Somerville Homeless Coalition’s clients experiencing homelessness this holiday season. SMEA will be collecting new and lightly used winter clothing and apparel that are crucial to keep our most vulnerable neighbors warm.

Visit Magpie Kids and shop for your little ones while supporting the Kennedy PTA. On Wednesday, December 13, from 2:30 to 8:00 p.m. Magpie Kids will donate 10% of sales to the Kennedy PTA. From 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. they will be serving wine and coffee. MAGPIE kids, 46 White St, Somerville.

Happy birthday this week to several locals: Happy birthday to a great photographer and a great person, Iaritza Menjivar. We wish her a very special day. We would like to send a special birthday wish to lifelong resident of Somerville, Frances Vallone, who will be celebrating her 95th birthday on December 17. This year’s Illuminations includes both self-guided tours and a bike tour led by the Somerville Bike Advisory Committee. Learn about The Growing Center’s Maple Syrup Project, December 13, 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the Somerville Public Library, 79 Highland Ave. The project is right around the corner (tapping starts at the end of January, and the boil will happen in early March). The Maple Project is an opportunity for Somerville residents to connect with each other and the natural world by tapping local maple trees, boiling sap, and making delicious maple syrup. If you are interested in helping, join in to learn more about how you can get involved and to help set intentions for this year’s activities with some related writings by professor, botanist, author and enrolled member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation Robin Wall Kimmerer. The Somerville Police Department has chosen the Mystic Learning Center to be the recipient of the “Fill the Cruiser” Toy Drive Campaign. In partnership with Target, the SPD will be collecting new, unopened gifts that will directly benefit the families of the MLC Community. Is your teen looking to make some extra money? The city’s Snow Shoveling Program is hiring youth to assist shoveling seniors and homeowners with disabilities out after snowstorms this winter. Teens and homeowners are paired for the season. After each storm, the homeowner will contact their assigned youth to request shoveling services. Somerville teens ages 14 to 19 are welcome to apply. Donations of socks, hats, jackets, hand warmers, sweatpants, and more will go a long way towards keeping the most vulnerable clients protected against the unpredictable New England weather.
