Somerville Board of Health seeks two new members

 The Somerville Local Board of Health seeks two new members, and all Somerville residents are invited to apply. The board offers an opportunity for residents with a range of experience, skills, expertise, and perspectives to share their talents and insights with their community. 

The Board of Health governs the Somerville Health and Human Services and Inspectional Services Departments. The Board works with the HHS director to oversee the city’s public health, disease control, sanitation, and environmental protection needs. Areas under the Boards purview include: 

 

  • Health care and disease control in coordination with MassDPH  

  • Housing and dwellings  

  • Enforce state sanitary code (ISD)  

  • Enforce lead poisoning regulations  

  • Site approval/rules and regulations for hazardous waste & solid waste (septage and garbage)  

  • Nuisances that may impact public health  

  • Food permits  

  • Smoking   

 

The Board typically meets virtually on the third Thursday of every month at 5:30 PM. Board members are volunteer positions appointed by the Mayor on the recommendation of the Appointments Advisory Committee and serve a one-year term. All Trustees must comply with and sign the City of Somerville’s Code of Conduct for Board, Commission, and Committee Members

Applications are due by December 1, 2023. Interested candidates should submit a statement of interest to kcarroll@somervillema.gov or by mail to Karin Carroll at 50 Evergreen Ave, Somerville, MA 02145. A background in public health is preferred, but no specific credentials are required.
