Tufts Street Reconstruction virtual community meeting, October 11

On October 10, 2023, in Latest News, by The Somerville Times

Mayor Katjana Ballantyne, Ward 1 Councilor Matthew McLaughlin, and City of Somerville staff invite you to a virtual community meeting about proposed transportation safety improvements on Tufts Street.

The City is repaving Tufts Street and reconstructing its sidewalks as part of the citywide Pavement and Sidewalk Management Program. This presents an opportunity to redesign the street to make it safer for all users. Tufts Street is designated as a Neighborway in the Somerville Bicycle Network Plan, so the new design will prioritize traffic calming elements to reduce speeds and discourage cut-through traffic.

In August, the city hosted the first public meeting for this project to hear about transportation safety concerns, gather ideas for the street, and discuss potential design concepts. At this upcoming meeting, the city plans to share a conceptual design and get feedback from attendees. The conceptual design will also be posted on the project website after the meeting with a survey for feedback. You can also join staff at a series of pop-up events this fall. Details for these events will be posted on the project website.

The city will present final designs for Tufts Street next spring. Construction is anticipated to begin in mid-2024 and continue through 2025.

The meeting will take place Wednesday, October 11, at 6:00 p.m. on Zoom. Learn more about the project and find the virtual meeting link at somervillema.gov/tuftsstreet.
