Lost and found

Life in the Ville by Jimmy Del Ponte

Back in the day, Boston politician Dapper O’Neil said they should put a fence around Somerville and give everybody 3-5 years. Wow! Well, we’ve come a long way since those days. I experienced a special Somerville moment recently.

On Friday, about 6:30 a.m., I drove to 7-Eleven near Trum Field to get some milk. I had my gym shorts on so I didn’t take my wallet just my debit card. When I got home from the store, I realized that I didn’t have my debit card.

I went into a panic and drove all the way back to the store. The cashier handed it to me when I walked in and told me that somebody had found it out in the parking lot. I was never so happy! It restored my faith in my fellow humans.

It’s such a pain in the neck to replace a lost card. I was glad that somebody didn’t find it in charge up hundreds of dollars at Best Buy or target.

When I was on my way back to the store the red light seemed longer and the traffic seemed worse. I was breathing heavy as I approach the store with the thought of the hassle it would be to replace the card. Here are readers comments:

“Years ago, I left my wallet with cash in it at Universe Gym in the men’s room on McGrath somewhere in the late 1980s. The owner called me two hours later and said somebody turned it in. Everything was in it.”

“Oh, that’s AWESOME! I braced for bad news. Things like this give me a teeny bit more faith in humanity and decency.”

“I lost my Discover card in Harvard Sq. and within a half an hour they went on a spending spree all through Harvard Sq., then downstairs in the Harvard T station buying Charlie cards then further on into Boston, Dorchester and Matapan. Two weeks ago!” Sad.

Nice to know that some of the pride is alive and well. Thank you, whoever you are.
