Julia Csekö began her curatorial practice while pursuing her BFA at the Federal University of Rio, in Brazil. She founded an artist collective GroupPy, and organized five exhibitions between 2005 and 2008, involving over 150 artists, from fresh out of college to internationally acclaimed. She continued her curatorial practice in North America after graduating with an MFA from SMFA at Tufts.

Between 2017 and 2018 Julia implemented an exhibitions program at the Villa Victoria Center for the Arts, the largest Latin led organization in Boston, curating eight exhibitions focused on Latinx artists. Currently, she works as an independent curator and educator, having organized exhibitions and calls for art in local galleries, including Speak Up, held at the Piano Craft Gallery in November 2020.

Sanctuary City is a Community Curator exhibition showcasing emerging and accomplished mid-career artists and a variety of media, from installations to award-winning comic books, the works on view address themes of immigration and community building. Experiences of trauma are commonplace in the lives of immigrants, but that does not invalidate or diminish the experiences and narratives of love, found family, resilience, resistance, and friendship. We dive into this conversation with heightened awareness, open ears, and hearts, taking in the ideas presented to us in hopes to learn, offering safe spaces, and creating more welcoming and safer environments for immigrant and refugee populations.
