State Rep. candidate to hold campaign kickoff June 14

The campaign to elect Jason Mackey, candidate for State Representative in the 27th Middlesex district, announced its first official event. The Campaign Kickoff will be held this Tuesday June 14 at 6:00 p.m. at The Independent in Union Square.“I’m humbled by the encouragement to run I’ve received from the community,” says Mackey. “I am proud to fight for tangible progress, not just lofty ideals, for Somerville residents.”

Mackey is the proud son of a single mom who worked three jobs to make ends meet for him and his grandparents. He plans to fight for affordable childcare and quality public schools from pre-K through college for all families. Having worked since he was 16, he knows the necessity of protections for workers and the importance of good jobs. No mother or child should have to juggle multiple jobs to make ends meet. As a renter, he has experienced the all too common massive rent increase and subsequent eviction that more residents than ever before can relate to and wants to ensure the development boom results in housing that Somervillians can afford.

Mackey believes every member of our community deserves equal opportunity and a chance to succeed. As someone who knows what it means to struggle in the face of poverty, racism, homophobia and systemic injustice – and who has tackled adversity head on by empowering others – he’s eager to advocate on Beacon Hill and be a voice for our most vulnerable members in our community.
