Obituary: Francesca ‘Frances’ (Giacalone) Giglio

Francesca “Frances” (Giacalone) Giglio, age 85, of Somerville passed away on Monday, April 18th, at Massachusetts General Hospital of Boston. Born in Salemi, Trapani, Sicily, she was the daughter of the late Giuseppe and Marianna (Amico) Giacalone. Frances came to the U.S. at the age of ten and settled with her family in Boston’s North End. She was employed for many years as a seamstress and lived again in Italy and Venezuela before settling in Somerville over 50 years ago.


Frances adored her family which is very close. She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren, and loved to cook and bake for them. Her family is continuing the traditions she taught them over the years.

Frances was the beloved wife of the late Antonino Giglio, and the devoted mother of Antonietta Ricci and her husband Pasquale Zarro of Woburn, and Marianne Sellitto and her husband Sabato Nino of Reading. She was the loving grandmother of Daniela and Nico Ricci, Amelia and Francesca Sellitto, and Pasquale and Stefano Zarro. She was the mother-in-law of Luciano Ricci, and the dear sister of the late Paula Curran and her late husband Donald, the late Francis Paul Giacalone and his late wife Rosa, and the late Anthony Giacalone and his surviving wife Leslee. Frances is also survived by many loving cousins, nieces and nephews in Canada, Italy and the U.S.

Funeral from the Dello Russo Funeral Home, 306 Main St., Medford on Wednesday, April 27th at 8:30 AM followed by a funeral mass celebrated in St. Raphael Church, 512 High St., Medford, at 9:30 AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, April 26th, from 4 through 8 PM. Services will conclude with burial at Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett.
